European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were central to efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This row threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other legal news:

  • A federal judge has blocked efforts to reduce security grants to local governments which resist specific federal immigration rules. The judge stated the action was “another example” of linking government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans ahead of the holiday period, coinciding with an ongoing border security initiative.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to accept a limited number of migrants from the US in exchange for increased assistance, following signing a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Additionally, a Democratic lawmaker has initiated legal action to demand the stripping of the current president’s name from a prominent cultural institution in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a broader belief in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy strategies.
