The US central bank cut interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second reduction this year amid financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.
Move Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve
The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts
In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Price increases has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job
The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.
Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve usually analyzes labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.
The figure of jobs created to the economy in August was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.
Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Decline
Though the bureau was set to publish last month’s employment data in early October, it suspended its release once the shutdown started. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand positions in September, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell said earlier this month, which he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.
Price Data Reveals Gradual Rise
Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still released its inflation report for September that showed that costs are going up, although slowly. Prices increased three percent over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
