2K Games has welcomed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to lead the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently crafting the anticipated third-person action-packed title known as Project Ethos.
Management Shift Comes After Mixed Reception
Brinkman takes on the leadership position at the development studio following the dismissal of former leader Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' lackluster unveiling last fall.
On Wednesday, the company's top executive a key figure updated employees about this strategic move through an internal memo, which highlighted that early feedback sessions had shown the need for a clearer game identity.
Ismailer stated that the developers is now overhauling Project Ethos with a refreshed focus, aiming to address gamer demands.
Trend of Strategic Hires
This announcement echoes a comparable step taken by the publisher in August, when they hired Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to work on the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.
Here is the entire text from the president's memo:
Dear Team—
I know you all just finished your town hall - I trust you’re as thrilled as I am with the good news. Previously I sent you all a note, I mentioned the following: “I am confident in this crew. You all are some of the most motivated and talented developers we have had the pleasure to collaborate with - and we’re eager for that collaboration to continue.”
Through your commitment and versatility, particularly over the last year, you repeatedly show that.
The player input from last fall’s Project ETHOS playtest was enlightening. It affirmed the promise of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had refinements needed. It revealed the need for a sharper vision.
The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve come. You took the criticism to consideration and reimagined Project ETHOS with a revitalized direction - one that’s ready to deliver on its ambition to our audience.
The belief in this project increases every day. To further the remarkable progress you’ve made, I’m excited to introduce the new hire as the new Director of the team. Following some time of discussions, Ben officially joins us on next week.
Ben’s management and background in the PVP shooter space is considerable, having spent the past decade and a half creating and overseeing some of the most recognizable franchises in the industry, including the acclaimed shooter, and most recently, Apex Legends.
Please join me in greeting him soon. We are all looking forward to keep observing the evolution of the game in the months to follow.
David

Game Information and Vision
The upcoming game was unveiled in October 2024 in conjunction with a community playtest. Initially, the developers presented the game as a "no-cost, third-person perspective action-packed experience and an innovative step forward on the genre."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in real-time to fit your unique tactics," the official summary reads. "Challenge the competition with new abilities, stakes, and challenges that change every round. Do you safely extract with your collected items? Or take a risk, risk it all, and pray your group can achieve the highest spot? The option is up to you."
Project Ethos does not have an official launch window or consoles, but fans can anticipate more updates as creation progresses.
